Ministers spend 90000 on overseas travel annually (according to the International Monetary Fund, the average spending on these trips is around $25,000). This spending has nothing to do with economic growth; it's in the service of maintaining a comfortable home for the royal family, and for maintaining the illusion of progress made during the economic boom that was brought to their doorstep.
The Royal family, as much as any other Western royal family, are more concerned with maintaining the appearance of prosperity than it is with growing their wealth. Prince Charles is reportedly worth a cool $10 million—roughly $400,000 in today's money.
All of which explains why, for any family, wealth is often only a perception and is more important than it was 10 years ago.
Here, too, the royal dynasty seems to have an agenda. The king, while serving as prime minister of the United Kingdom, issued a decree in 2011 to strip local councils of the ability to decide what constitutes public space. This is the very same kind of initiative that was used in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 when the Royal family, in collaboration with the local police and fire, conducted a paramilitary raid of police officers on a peaceful demonstration in which no one was injured.
That sort of thing happens, after all, every day. The city of St. Paul, Minnesota, which has seen one of its biggest anti-fascists demonstrations this week, has the dubious distinction of having the largest private army in America, with a fleet of nearly 80 Humvees that can be deployed in an hour.
At one time, the king himself was rumored to have ordered a massive military parade in the United States following his visit to Cleveland in December 2013, along with other prominent visitors including former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. A report by The New York Times suggested the king had suggested to New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly that he be arrested, to show how the king, who has not been shy about displaying his power, could enforce his vision. At one point in 2015, Kelly was told that the king wanted to take over the police department and use it as a private army.
A report in The Huffington Post also confirmed that the king ordered a large number of U.S. military aircraft, some of which had been supplied by China, to fly over an area of the state called Minnesota, where the city of St. Paul holds its annual anti-fascist demonstration on August 17. It is worth noting that some of those in the "U.S. forces" were also seen there during the Ferguson demonstration earlier this year.
